Based on two case studies, Pakistan Television (PTV) and Doordarshan (DD), this study demonstrates that the actual, if inadvertent, victim of globalisation has been state broadcasting and an associated developmentist. During the years 2002–2008, developed countries had 89.5% of the global television market share.

Most of these dramas are private productions with slick production values and big budgets but sometimes i actually miss PTV home productions with their quaint sets, saqeel Urdu dialogues etc like someone mentioned Kaanch ke Par. Another drama from the last 10 years having this old world PTV charm and good classic writing by Dr.

Anwar Sajjad was 'Taawaan'(ransom). I have no idea when it was telecast but it could not have been more than 10 years ago. The cast included Sabiha Khanum, Nauman Masood, Asad amongst others.

It depicted the problems of middle class families very well. Sadly it is not to be found online. Colony 52 by Anwar Maqsood focusing on the lives of refugee colonies in the early days of Pakistan was also great though I do not remember who the director was. Another play I would definitely recommend to everyone was 'Neeli Dhoop' written by Bushra Ansari and directed very well by her daughter Nariman. And am glad someone mentioned Aansoo. It was a really nice play with an excellent OST. Another one of those gems from the time most people assumed PTV had stopped making good plays but in fact were too overwhelmed by the Indian stuff to look elsewhere.

And its criminal how not many people mentioned 'Mere Paas Paas' which was actually the single harbinger of the whole revival of drama in Pakistan after the onslaught of Star Plus. And do I even need to mention the winning Mehreen Jabbar/Umera ahmad combo? Another drama from the last 10 years having this old world PTV charm and good classic writing by Dr. Anwar Sajjad was 'Taawaan'(ransom).

Sadly it is not to be found online. Finally someone has mentioned this masterpiece online, I was afraid people would not recall it b/c it is pretty old (aired on PTV in mid 90's I think). It was an incredible PTV play set in Lahore about family ties and old cultural values being forgotten. Had a very Austen feel to it and the cast was amazing! Filmstars Habib and Sabiha Khanum added so much depth to their roles - it really justifies why they have 'legendary' status. The lead actress was very promising too.(don't know her name).
